Senate Confirms Susan Schwab as USTR Ambassador

Confirmation opens the door for Ambassador Susan Schwab to move ahead with bilateral and multilateral efforts.

The Senate confirmed former U.S. Trade Representative Deputy Ambassador Susan Schwab as the new head of USTR Thursday. She is the 15th United States Trade Representative, succeeding Rob Portman for his post as the president's budget director.

Schwab enters the post at a critical time for World Trade Organization talks, says U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga. A deadline looms the end of this month for completing an agreement on agriculture.

"The future of U.S. agriculture depends on exports and new opportunities around the world. The agriculture negotiations are at a vital point and the rest of the world must understand that the United States will not succumb to pressure in the face of a bad deal. To make concessions without achieving our goals of substantial tariff liberalization would undermine the support the Administration now enjoys from farmers and ranchers across the country," he says.

A statement from Schwab says she's eager to move ahead with bilateral and multilateral efforts to realize the president's vision for free and fair trade. "And I look forward to working closely with members of the House and Senate to advance the interests of American farmers, workers, businesses and service providers as we advance America's pro-trade agenda," she says.
