There's been an arrest in theft and abuse of Wendy Halweg's barrel racing horse, Dually.
Halweg was competing in Ft. Pierre, S.D., July 4 when her horse was stolen from the Stanley County Fairgrounds and was later found with extensive injuries.
Stanley County authorities arrest Flint Dahl and charged him with two counts of grand theft and one count of inhumane treatment of an animal. Each grand theft charge is a Class 4 felony, which carries with it a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and may also carry up to a $25,000 fine.
"We are pleased to see the authorities file these charges," says Chase Adams, CEO of the American Horse League. "While we all regret that things like this happen and feel compassion toward the family of the individual charged, but we believe it is important to bring justice to Ms. Halweg and those affected. … I believe these stiff charges clearly demonstrate that the people of South Dakota will not tolerate animal cruelty and that the current laws are sufficient to handle cases of this nature."
