Dairy producers are facing a "perfect storm" of challenges, according to the south Dakota Dairy Producers.
The group organized a meeting of representatives from the state's major dairy lenders, milk buyers, the governor, secretary of agriculture, congressional field representatives.
"We really need to make everyone more aware of how this financial crisis is continuing to develop," said Marv Post, SDDP chairman and dairy producer from Volga. "We need open communication with the banking community, the state government, our supporting businesses and our own communities. That's what we were there to establish."
Bill Even, South Dakota secretary of agriculture, offered to meet with lenders' boards to help them understand the cyclical nature of the dairy business and encourage them to work through the crisis with their customers.
"Local ag lenders recognize that production agriculture is a heavy credit user," Even said. "The challenge is to help federal regulators understand this as well."
