The Public Lands Council Wednesday kicked off its annual meeting in Deadwood, S.D., running through Saturday.

PLC members will hear from public land management agencies, congressional representatives and industry leaders during the four-day meeting that will result in the development of group positions and policies for the upcoming year.

Dustin Van Liew, PLC executive director, said the meeting will also likely serve as a catalyst for new approaches for the group's upcoming projects.

Wednesday's kick-off began with the annual meeting of PLC's national affiliate, Association of National Grasslands, which brought in ranchers from the grassland states. Wednesday evening, attendees hear from South Dakota's Agriculture Secretary, Lucas Lentsch, who presented a keynote address.

On Thursday, participants will hear from a National Grasslands panel, the directors of the Natural Resources Conservation Services' Sage Grouse Initiative, Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service Range Staff and officials from Washington, a panel of congressional staff, and the President of the Society for Range Management, PLC said.

Members will also discuss PLC's plan of action with regard to issues such as the federal wild horse program and documenting the socioeconomic importance of grazing on public lands.

Finally, the PLC Board of Directors will select projects for funding by the Public Lands Endowment Trust, which was founded in 2011 to promote, protect and enhance the public lands grazing industry.

Attendees will also hear updates Friday from PLC affiliates ANG, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the American Sheep Industry Association.
