Pro-Ethanol Camp Pushes Renewables on the Fourth

Pro-Ethanol Camp Pushes Renewables on the Fourth

Fuels America gas pump commercial urges consumers to consider ethanol in Fourth of July travel plans

The Fuels America coalition has launched a new wave of ads pushing cost savings of renewable fuels for consumers as gas prices rise during peak travel season.

Those higher gas prices – which Fuels America says is caused principally by turmoil in Iraq – means the 41% of American consumers who plan to travel over the Fourth of July weekend will have to consider more ways to manage costs. So will the 75% who plan to travel this summer, Fuels America adds.

The ads ask drivers in the Washington, D.C., area to support the Renewable Fuel Standard – the policy that determines the volume of renewable fuels required to be blended into the fuel supply each year.

The ad – which will run on gas station video screens – reminds drivers that "supporting clean energy production here in America is better for the environment, is better for your wallet, and because biofuel is higher octane, it's actually even better for your engine."

The ad also says the RFS already delivers benefits to consumers: "Thanks to America's Renewable Fuel Standard, homegrown biofuels are cheaper than gasoline, saving you money every time you fill up."

The WTOP spot asks Americans to declare their "independence" from foreign fossil fuels and "the sky-high price of gasoline."

Wholesale prices for ethanol are about $1 less than wholesale gasoline, Fuels America says, and E85 fuel is selling for $2.87 on average, according to

"The Fourth of July is everything that's right about America," says the WTOP spot. "But getting bent over a barrel by Big Oil couldn't be more wrong. Tell the EPA: Help declare America's energy independence. Protect the Renewable Fuel Standard."
