A subset of Precision Planting customers have been impacted by a security breach affecting one of the company's data servers, a Precision Planting spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

The security breach was discovered in late March, said Christy Toedebusch, Corporate Communications Director for the Climate Corporation, which oversees Precision Planting. It affected some customers' names, addresses, tax identification numbers, and in some cases, financial information.

The server also held some employee W-2 forms, Social Security numbers, and driver's license numbers, though Toedebusch reports that agronomic data was not accessed.

The company believes the breach was not an attempt to steal customer information, and they are not aware of any misuse of the information the server contained.

"We're taking this point to work to increase security safeguards on especially the impacted server and we're also reviewing the security on other servers, obviously in an effort to prevent any further incidents," Troedebusch said.

"No system can be completely secure, but we do believe that the new security protocols that we're setting up will provide significant protection for that customer data," she said.

In a letter sent this month to affected customers, the company provided tips for protecting sensitive information, and offered complimentary identity protection system membership to impacted businesses and individuals.
