Practical Farmers of Iowa Has Youth Mini-Grants

Practical Farmers of Iowa Has Youth Mini-Grants

PFI announces it'll provide mini-grants to youth ages 18 and younger for on-farm research and demonstration projects. Applications are due by April 15 and can be from individuals or small groups working independently or as part of an FFA chapter or 4-H club.

Practical Farmers of Iowa has announced it will provide multiple mini-grants to youth ages 18 and younger for on-farm research and demonstration projects. Designed to encourage youth to take an interest in agricultural research and demonstration projects, grants will vary in amount depending upon project complexity and expenses, and can range from $50 to $250 per applicant. Applications are due on or before April 15, 2011, and are welcomed from individuals or small groups working independently or as part of FFA or 4-H clubs.

"Our youth are the future of farming," says Practical Farmers of Iowa executive director Teresa Opheim. "What we do to encourage them and to help them cultivate fresh ideas today will lead us to a better tomorrow."

Encouraging more youth to choose careers in farming, agriculture

Eligible candidates must be current family or student members of Practical Farmers of Iowa, 18 or younger, and willing to share their research results with the PFI membership and beyond through, but not limited to, press releases, newsletter articles and at events. PFI Youth Mini Grants can be used to reimburse expenses such as livestock or livestock supplies; seed, fertilizer or laboratory testing; or office supplies, food and beverage for a demonstration event, and other pre-approved items.

Contact Luke Gran, 515-232-5661, luke@practicalfarmers.org, for an application or visit practicalfarmers.org/programs/youth-and-next-generation.html.  An independent panel of Practical Farmers of Iowa members will review the applications and announce recipients in May.

PFI includes a diverse group of farmers and friends of farmers. Corn, soybeans, beef cattle and hay are the top enterprises for PFI farmers, although many have a variety of other operations, including fruits and vegetables. PFI's programming stresses farmer-to-farmer networking through research and demonstration, field days, conferences and more. For information call 515-232-5661 or visit www.practicalfarmers.org.
