Pork Producers Council Holds Legislative Conference in Washington

Producers from 17 states are in Washington to lobby Congress on industry issues.

More than 150 pork producers will be addressed Wednesday morning by Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns. He's expected to outline the administration's thoughts on the House Farm Bill and what they would like to see in the Senate version. Pending free trade agreements will also most likely be discussed.

The National Pork Producers Council is spending two days in Washington to lobby Congress on the 2007 Farm Bill as well as several other issues. Among their priorities is expansion of the nutrition, renewable energy, and conservation programs; more funding for the Market Access Program and authorization of a center for the study of commodities including swine. The free trade agreements with Columbia, Peru, Panama and South Korea that Congress is sitting on are another key issue they will be urging lawmakers move on.
