Pork Producer Appointed to Iowa Environmental Protection Commission

Gov. Culver appoints Gene Ver Steeg, who is a hog farmer and a veterinarian, to EPC.

Gov. Chet Culver on November 20 appointed Dr. Eugene Ver Steeg from Inwood in northwest Iowa to the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission.

"I am confident Dr. Ver Steeg will be a great addition to the Environmental Protection Commission," said Culver. "He has a tremendous amount of experience, including over 25 years in the farming industry. I look forward to working with Dr. Ver Steeg as the newest member of the EPC."

Ver Steeg owns and manages Sunnycrest Inc., an Iowa wean-to-finish hog operation. He graduated from South Dakota State University in 1962, received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1966 and practiced as a veterinarian until 1981. Ver Steeg has farmed since 1980 and has been active with state and national pork producer organizations, recently serving as president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association from 2006-2007.

Ver Steeg will fill a position vacated by Ralph Klemme that requires an active grain or livestock farmer. His term will begin immediately and will continue through April 30, 2011. The appointment will be subject to senate confirmation during the 2009 Iowa legislative session.

The Environment Protection Commission is a nine person commission that provides policy oversight of Iowa's environmental regulations.
