Pioneer Hi-Bred Expands in South Dakota

Company will add soybean research at Volga site.

Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, recently announced an expansion of its South Dakota research center at Volga to accommodate the growth of research and product advancement programs, including a new soybean research program.

"The expansion of the Pioneer Hi-Bred Volga research facility reflects our commitment to developing and advancing the right products on South Dakota acres, for South Dakota farmers," says Dirk Charlson, Pioneer research scientist for soybean product development at Volga. "Pioneer looks forward to continued growth in South Dakota as we strive to help growers increase their productivity to feed and fuel the world."

The Volga research facility opened in 2008. Along with the new soybean program, the 12,000-square-foot expansion will accommodate an existing corn research program and the Impact plot product advancement program. Pioneer is scheduled to break ground on the expansion this week.

The Volga soybean research program focuses on delivering products that best fit grower needs in South Dakota and western Minnesota. The program focuses on mid-I to mid-II maturity groups and developing varieties with greater yields that will have increased resistance to yield-robbing diseases, such as Phytophthora root rot. The center's corn research program plays a vital role in developing corn hybrids, commercializing new technologies and testing next-generation products. The Pioneer Impact plot program selects the best Pioneer brand corn and soybean products to fit local growing environments.

In the past few years, Pioneer has grown its research and development programs across the U.S. It also has grown its presence in South Dakota with the addition of employees, a new sales area and several new points of sale.

Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, is one of the world's leading developer and supplier of advanced plant genetics, providing seeds to farmers in more than 90 countries.
