PA Farmer Wheels Into Skid Steer Championship Semi-Finals

Mellott competes in North American Skid Steer Championship semi round tomorrow.

Tomorrow, you won't find Thomas Mellott at Ken-Mel Farm pushing dairy manure or loading feed. But it was a good place to hone the Mercersburg farmer's skid steer skills for the semifinal round competition of the New Holland Construction North American Skid Steer Championship in Louisville, Ky.

Mellott will be competing against 31 other semi-finalists at the event. He'll face off against the most talented compact equipment operators in North America in a series of skill-testing challenges using a New Holland Construction skid steer loader.

They are the best of a field of more than 2,000 participants who competed in New Holland Construction Super Boom Road Show events across the United States and Canada this year. Mellott won the local Super Boom Road Show competition in March at the 2011 Keystone Nationals, an indoor truck and tractor pull championship at Harrisburg, Pa.

He'll stack his 40years of equipment experience against the other semi-finalists vying for the title of North American Skid Steer Champion and the grand prize of a new, fully loaded New Holland Construction 200 Series skid steer loader valued at $35,000, plus $5,000 cash and New Holland Construction gear.

Mellott's fans can follow his progress during the championship competition on Oct. 27 on Twitter at

The North American Skid Steer Championship event completes the year-long celebration of the launch of the New Holland Construction 200 Series skid steer loaders. But the competition will be tough.

The competitors are pros, says David December, New Holland Construction marketing manager. "They do everything from material handling and landscaping to grading, plowing and digging.

"The Skid Steer Championship competition demonstrates the advantages of our new 200 Series skid steers, adds December. "This includes outstanding control, easy attachment changes, precise maneuverability, superior visibility and best-in-class dump height and reach."

Events benefit local American and Canadian Red Cross chapters. To date, New Holland Construction and its dealers have donated more than $29,000 to the Red Cross through the Super Boom Road Show events.
