One More Iowan Is Driving a Flex Fuel Vehicle

Iowa Corn Growers Association announces winner in its Drive E85 Sweepstakes.

Last February, the Iowa Corn Growers Association began collecting entries from Iowans in the corn growers' Drive E85 Sweepstakes. The winner was announced at the 2007 Iowa State Fair and drove away with a one-year lease in a 2007 Flex-Fuel Chevy Silverado.

More than 2,500 entries were taken on the Web site and at E85 stations in the state. Twenty randomly chosen people were given the chance to attend the Iowa State Fair. Twenty different keys were handed out to participants during a special giveaway presentation on the Susan Knapp Ampitheather as Eddie Hatfield from KJJY emceed the event.

Randy Schlatter was the first person to try the key and he opened the door to his new truck for a year, courtesy of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board. So he is the winner. The 2007 Chevy Silverado is a Flexible-Fuel Vehicle designed to be "flexible" enough to run on gasoline or fuel blends of up to 85% ethanol or E85.

Schlatter is more than familiar with FFVs as he currently drives one and speaks every day with farmers growing corn through his job with Pioneer Hi-Bred.

Telling consumers about E85 vehicles

"The Drive E85 Sweepstakes gave us a way to reach consumers about the importance of Flexible Fuel Vehicles," says Shannon Textor, market development director for the Iowa Corn Growers. "This truck is a moving billboard to reach other consumers as well as those who entered our contest about the importance of E85 fuel and FFVs."

In Iowa, one out of every 10 vehicles purchased is a flexible-fuel vehicle, or FFV, but many people are not aware that they have one. Also, 60 cents of every dollar spent on E85 stays in Iowa, says Textor. "Ethanol helps increase energy independence, improve the environment and increase our state's economy by using a fuel source made right here in our cornfields," she says. "Corn growers in Iowa have been promoting ethanol for more than 30 years."
