Obama To Sign Farm Bill Friday

President Barack Obama travels to the Midwest to sign long-awaited bill

President Barack Obama on Friday will travel to Michigan State University to sign the Farm Bill.

The Senate passed the bill Tuesday, following passage by the House one week ago.

"President Obama will see firsthand the research that institutions such as MSU are doing to create jobs and drive innovation that benefits farmers, ranchers, our rural communities and our nation as a whole," a White House announcement explained.

Following remarks, President Obama will sign the Agriculture Act of 2014 into law, the announcement added.

"This bill provides certainty to America's farmers and ranchers, and contains a variety of commonsense reforms that my Administration has consistently called for, including reforming and eliminating direct farm subsidies and providing assistance for farmers when they need it most," Obama commented Tuesday afternoon, following Senate passage of the bill. "It will continue reducing our deficits without gutting the vital assistance programs millions of hardworking Americans count on to help put food on the table for their families."

"As the pioneer land-grant institution in America, we are honored and pleased that President Obama will be signing the Farm Bill on MSU's campus. I would like to recognize the leadership of Sen. Debbie Stabenow and the Michigan congressional delegation for their hard work in passing this legislation," MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon added.
