NRCS Releases Soil Erosion Results

Natural Resources Inventory provides information on resource conditions and trends.

USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service released state-by-state results today for soil erosion and land cover and use on nonfederal lands, based on the 2003 Natural Resources Inventory.

"This information is the first release of any state-level estimates from the Annual NRI inventory process," says NRCS Chief Arlen L. Lancaster.

NRI was first conducted in 1977 and done every 5 years until 1997. In 2000, NRCS started to transition to an annual inventory cycle. NRI provides information about various resource conditions and trends on nonfederal lands.

More information about NRI and conservation programs can be found at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/NRI/ or http://www.nrcs.usda.gov.
