New oil for new diesels

Low-emission diesels require improved oil performance standards.

Shell Lubricants will be stocking retail shelves with its new reformulated Rotella-T motor oil in mid-October , in time to meet the demands of 2007 model year highway diesel engines which have to burn ultra-low sulfur fuel.

The upgraded version of Shell’s heavy duty motor oil carries the new CJ-4 rating for diesels and is blended to comply with low-sulfur fuel use and emission controls found on the new engines. In addition, the new formulation has shown nearly 50% less wear in Shell laboratory test engines. Shell markets the new oil as having “triple protection” – a design that reduces wear, controls deposits, and maintains emission control.

Company marketing officials say the new formulation will cost 10% to 15% more than traditional Rotella-T, due to the increased costs for low-sulfur additives.

The new Rotella can be used in older engines, but the older formulations will not meet the demands of 2007 and later diesel engines with emission controls.
