The new hard red spring wheat is featured at seven plots across the state.

'Norden' is a new hard red spring wheat variety for the 2012 growing season to be previewed at Minnesota field days in July.

Norden was released by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in January 2012 with seed available for planting next year.

Norden, tested as MN03196, is noted for its combination of high grain yield and test weight, and good straw strength. Norden has average grain protein content and moderate Fusarium head blight resistance, both similar to Faller. Norden has good leaf rust resistance and excellent resistance to preharvest sprouting.

University of Minnesota experts with information about wheat production will be making presentations at the field days, and include wheat breeder Jim Anderson, Extension agronomist Jochum Wiersma, Extension educator Doug Holen, and Extension plant pathologist Madeleine Smith.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota have been evaluating and developing wheat varieties since 1889.

Norden will be distributed through Minnesota Crop Improvement Association members, a list of seed producers will be available in September at www.mncia.org.
