New Herbicides for Dry Bean, Flax

EPA labels Spartan 4F for kochia control in flax and Valor for desiccation in dry beans.

There are new herbicide products available for use on flax and dry beans in North Dakota.

The EPA has issued a Section 18 specific exemption for Spartan 4F, allowing North Dakota flax producers to use the herbicide to control kochia and ALS-resistant kochia. The exemption allows a single ground application of 3 to 8 fluid ounces of Spartan 4F per acre, depending on soil type. The application must be made up to 30 days before and three days after planting. FMC makes Spartan.

EPA also labeled Valor herbicide for dry bean desiccation. Made by Valent USA Corporation, Valor has been labeled at 1.5 to 2.0 oz per acre with an MSO-type adjuvant. Valor is not a restricted use product.

Valor has been one of the best desiccants for dry beans in NDSU trials, says Richard Zollinger, NDSU extension weed specialist.
