New Bill Would Boost Biofuels

Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, introduces a bill to extend and increase the Renewable Fuels Standard and drastically increase U.S. biofuel use.

Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, introduced the Biofuels Security Act in the Senate Thursday, on the first day of the 110th Congress.

The Act would extend and increase the Renewable Fuels Standard to require 30 billion gallons by 2020 and 60 billion by 2030, as compared with the current figure of 7.5 billion by 2012.

The ambitious bill also would call for almost all vehicles made in the U.S. to be able to run on ethanol mixes within 10 years, also requiring major oil companies to install E85 pumps at half of their stations within that time.

The bill seems unlikely to pass in this form due to the grand scale of its requirements - currently only 1% of U.S. gas stations have E85 pumps.

Harkin is the Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
