NDSU Agribusiness Chair Dies In Farm Accident

Cole Gustafson, 56, dies on the scene at his parents' farm north of the Twin Cities.

Cole Gustafson, chairman of North Dakota State University's Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics, died in an accident on his parents' farm near Center, Minn., on Saturday.

The Chisago County, Minn., sheriff department says that Gustafson was apparently planting corn. Officers found him in the field under the rear tire of Case 554 tractor. He died on the scene.

Gustafson, 56, was well known in the Dakotas and the surrounding region. He did research and extension work in financial management strategies for farms, ranches, agribusinesses and agricultural lenders. He led several projects to create new value added agriculture and biofuel production facilities in North Dakota. Gustafson wrote authored more than 47 peer-reviewed journal articles, obtained more than $1.5 million in grant funding for NDSU and was a frequent contributor to Dakota Farmer.
