National Arboretum Treasure of Species, Germplasm

Scientists gather, preserve germplasm of hundreds of species of ornamental shrubs, flowering trees on Arboretum grounds.

The National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. is more than collection of beautiful plants and trees arranged into show gardens that offer visitors a display of incredible beauty. It is also a research site, where scientists work to collect, preserve and improve dozens of species of the plants and trees that make landscapes around the world more beautiful and more enduring.

In early April, members of the North American Agricultural Journalists traveled to Washington, D.C. for their annual spring meeting. Among the educational activities in store for the group was a visit to the National Arboretum and a chance to talk to some of the scientists who work there.

The images below share some of what they learned.
