Monsanto to Host Two Northeast Tech Showcases

Monsanto to Host Two Northeast Tech Showcases
N.Y. and Md. sites to feature corn and bean pipeline products, RIB, drought tolerance.

This summer, Monsanto will give farmers a first-hand look at its RIB (refuge-in-the-bag) Complete technology, Genuity SmartStax corn, Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans and drought-tolerance. Technology Showcase locations will be at Canandaigua, N.Y., and Hebron, Md.

Farmers in southern Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware may be especially interested in drought-tolerance. But the new 5% RIB SmartStax hybrids will also be of high interest.

EAR-CATCHING: The 5% refuge-in-the-bag trait may play second-fiddle to drought-tolerance traits this year for a growing number of Mid-Atlantic farmers.

While this single-bag option is still pending regulatory approval, it would eliminate the need to planting a separate, potentially lower yielding refuge. After approval, the product will be marketed as RIB Complete, says Chism Craig, Monsanto Technical Development Manager.

Planting a refuge is important to ensure insect populations don't become resistant to the Bt gene. RIB Complete would provide insect resistance management for above- and below-ground insect management
