Mixed Opinions On Commodity Support Cuts

Mixed Opinions On Commodity Support Cuts
Polled farmers are split on impact of losing USDA commodity support programs.

As Congress wrestles with reducing the 2011-12 federal budget, American Agriculturist asked farmers attending New York Farm Show this question: How would loss of USDA commodity support programs impact your farm?

With 99% of the 216 respondents coming from the Northeast and 80% having dairy or other livestock enterprises, the results weren't too surprising.

24% said losing commodity support programs would have no effect.

45% felt the program losses would have little effect.

25% indicated the loss would pose substantial problems for their businesses.

6% said loss of commodity supports would pose major problems.

FARMER POLL: More than 200 farmers shared their views on elimination of commodity support programs.

Comments varied, depending on the type of farm. Small farms typically don't benefit greatly. And as one New York producer put it: "When prices are good, we don't need them."
