Even if you don't raise sheep and aren't yet a sheep enthusiast, there's probably something you would enjoy seeing or hearing at the 2011 Meat Ewe @ the Symposium event. It's scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 224 at the Boone County Fairgrounds on the southeast corner of Lebanon, just off the first exit northbound on Interstate 65.
The event is sponsored by the Indiana Sheep Association. Topics are geared toward youth and adult producers, providing tips on how to produce more lamb meat in a more efficient manner. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The sessions start at 9:30 a.m. All times are EDT.
Sessions include how to accelerate lambing, featuring Richard Erhardt of Michigan State University, and a special presentation by Ashley Jones, a national FFA Ag Entrepreneur winner.
Other sessions will include how to monitor parasites and implement a deworming program, plus one program on blogging your message, by Leah Beyer. It's designed to use new social media to get out your message.
You'll also hear about how Kentucky uses a check off to grade lambs and goats and improve selling and marketing opportunities. An effort has been made over the past three years to begin such a program in Indiana, but it hasn't gotten off the ground. Tess Caudill and John Baugh will lead that session.
There are many other sessions, and tons of other activities going on during the day. Lunch is sponsored by the Indiana Shetland Sheep Breeder's Association. There's even a wool scarf contest with both youth and adult divisions, a minimal entry fee and prizes.
