Looking for Environmental Excellence

Missouri Pork Association calling for applicants in Missouri Environmental Steward Award program.

The Missouri Pork Association is accepting applications for its 2012 Missouri Environmental Steward Award program. The goal of this program is to recognize a Missouri producer who excels in the area of on-farm environmental stewardship.

It is also a great opportunity for the industry to promote environmental excellence and make the public, as well as policymakers aware of the proactive measures producers are taking to protect the environment. Managing an environmentally friendly swine operation these days takes extra effort and dollars. Many Missouri swine producers are investing in a comprehensive nutrient management plan and keeping track of detailed records for their farms as well as for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Fisher Hog Farms, Middletown, won the award in 2011. Ed and Helen Fisher founded the farm in 1957, and it is now managed by their sons Jim and David. The Fisher family lives on the farm, and is devoted to raising quality pork and protecting the natural resources for future generations.

Applicants will be judged on several different categories, including manure management systems, soil and water conservation practices, reduction of odors/improvement of air quality, wildlife management practices, and community outreach.

Applications must be received by the Missouri Pork Association no later than Oct. 15, 2011. Following a review of all applications by a five-member evaluation committee, the winner will be announced at the 2012 Missouri Pork Expo on Feb. 8 in Columbia. The winner will receive an award plaque and a $1,000 cash award. Visit to download the application.

The Missouri Pork Association will also work with the state winner in applying for the national Pork Industry Environmental Steward Award.
