Here's a sneak peek at what's coming in the December issue of Indiana Prairie Farmer, which could show up in your mailbox any day now. You'll find an article on an annual contest that you won't want to mix. You'll get a chance to win free seed for completing a few simple questions about what you already know about- raising corn and soybeans.
The annual contest is co-sponsored by Beck's Hybrids, Atlanta, Ind. It began as a yield-guessing contest, with readers guessing yields of fields depicted and described in the magazine. Because nailing a yield without knowing the history of each field can be difficult, we transformed it into a crops knowledge contest last year. This year is much the same, only the questions are even easier!
First prize will be six bags of Beck's seed corn, second prize is six bags of Becks soybean seed, and third place is six bags of Beck's wheat seed or equivalent. There are no strings attached. Employees of Beck's Hybrids and their immediate family members are not eligible to win.
We've even helped you out- all questions are multiple choice. Most of the answers can be found in Purdue University's Corn and Soybean Field Guide, published by the Purdue Diagnostic Training Clinic. We used a 2010 edition to find answers, but you can still find the information in most of the older editions of the guide. Look for 2011 editions coming soon. We'll keep you posted as to when they are available and how you and get a copy.
Winners of the contest will be announced, likely in the March issue. Also, we'll build stories off of most of the questions asked on the quiz/ Deadline for entering will be Jan. 15. Look for another reminder about the quiz n the January issue of Indiana Prairie Farmer, and watch for more details and helpful hints here on the Web.
All decisions of the judges will be final. Indiana Prairie Farmer reserves the right to publish pictures of the winners of the top three individuals in the contest.
