Livestock Producers Should Check out ManureTech 2007

This farm show focuses on a wide range of demonstrations and looks at all aspects of waste management.

ManureTech 2007, the country's largest manure-focused farm show, will be held August 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Dairy Forage Research Center Farm, near Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, just northwest of Madison, Wis.

It will feature a trade show, equipment displays and demonstrations of pit agitation, tanker application and dragline injection. A manure spill response demonstration will offer practical steps producers can take to control a manure runoff situation.

"We're also going to demonstrate the proper way to go into a confined space when dangerous manure gasses may be present," says Kevin Erb, University of Wisconsin Extension specialist, "and we'll show how to actually rescue someone out of a manure tank."

Educational seminars will include compost barn management, sod and pasture manure application, tools for evaluating soil moisture in the field, runoff prevention and manure management in no-till.

"This show looks at all aspects of manure management, including storage, treatment and application," said Randy Fonner, University of Illinois Extension specialist.

"We've made a very strong push for equipment companies to do field demonstrations," Erb notes. "We don't want you to come and walk around a shiny piece of equipment. We want you to actually see what the equipment does, and if it's going to meet the needs for your particular farm."

The Expo is free. A detailed agenda and list of vendors can be found at

The Upper Midwest Manure Handling Expo is a joint project of the professional manure applicators and Extension in partner states, including University of Illinois Extension. ManureTech 2007 is sponsored by the Professional Nutrient Applicators Association of Wisconsin, in cooperation with UW Extension and the USDA Dairy Forage Research Center. The show will rotate to Ohio in 2008.
