The American Royal tradition continues in Kansas City each fall, with numerous livestock and horse show activities, contests, educational exhibits and concerts. Each year Missourians and Kansans flock to the American Royal to help with the many shows and events.
Jim McNair, president and CEO of the American Royal, says the volunteers really help make the show unique. "We have people check in exhibitors at the stalls to greet them and make them feel welcome," he says.
Aside from the livestock and horse shows, volunteers are also needed for the annual American Royal Barbeque Contest, held Oct. 2-5. McNair says he anticipates exhibitors from 40 states nationwide participating in the livestock shows and participants from 35 to 40 states entering the barbeque contest.
Of course, there is also room for volunteers in the agricultural education area, which also includes a youth rodeo and livestock birthing center.
