Learn About Your One Of Your Biggest Customers

In celebration of June Dairy Month dairies in Mandan, N.D., and Brandon, Goodwin and Veblen, S.D., are offering tours and free lunches.

If you grow corn, soybeans or alfalfa you might want to check out one of the dairy open houses in your area this month. Dairies are major users your crops, says Steve Dick, executive director of Ag United For South Dakota.

North Dakota

  • June 23 – Northern Light Dairy, Mandan, N.D., will host a breakfast on the farm.  The dairy is operated by Kenton and Bobbie Jo, Andrew and Jenni and Michael Holle.

South Dakota

  • June 9 – Royalwood Dairy, Brandon, S.D. Lunch on the farm from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors can participate in guided tours of the dairy and learn more about dairy production and how milk gets from the farm to the store. Children's entertainers, Do Re Let's Play!, will provide entertainment for kids visiting the dairy at 10a.m. SDSU football players and Brandon Valley High School football alumni will be hosting Fuel Up to Play 60 kid's activity stations. Families can milk "Bessy" the cow, make crafts as a part of Hood Magazine's Make N' Take monthly activity and participate in other family friendly activities to be taking place. Since 2008 the Ode family has hosted an open house at their dairy every June in celebration of Dairy Month. "We appreciate the Ode family's willingness to open up their farm to their neighbors and folks from the surrounding communities," says Kelly Nelson, Outreach director for Ag United. "It is a great opportunity for people to see firsthand how committed South Dakota Dairy farmers are to their cows and the environment," Nelson says. Royalwood Dairy is located 5 miles south of Brandon on SD Hwy 11 and 1/2 mile east on 266th Street or from Sioux Falls on I-229 take exit 6, the 10th street exit follow to Hwy 11 corner then turn ½ mile north on Hwy 11 and ½ mile east on 266th street. The event is sponsored in part by Ag United for South Dakota, Midwest Dairy Association and the South Dakota Soybean Research & Promotion Council.
  • June 16 – MoDak Dairy, Goodwin, S.D. Lunch on the farm 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tours, children's activities and a free lunch are planned. The dairy is located at 46516 171st Street, Goodwin.
  • June 28 -- Marshall Dairy, Veblen, S.D. Open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Tour the dairy and learn about today's dairy farming. Guests can enjoy a free cheeseburger meal. The dairy is located at 10530 448th Ave., Veblen.
