Learn About Organic Sheep Production

Learn About Organic Sheep Production

An organic sheep production field day will be held September 15 on a farm near Earlham in central Iowa. Attendees will learn about the complete system.

Sharon Krause, who owns and operates Dalla Terra Ranch located at Earlham in central Iowa, will share information about her organic sheep production and grazing-management practices at a Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) Field Day to be held on Thursday, September 15, beginning at 5 p.m.

Participants will learn about building and maintaining pasture health and vigor. Krause will demonstrate the sorting chute and corral system she designed last year with the help of Temple Grandin, a designer of livestock handling facilities and a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Krause will also share her experiences with foliar feeding, describe native prairie restoration work underway on the farm and discuss the practice of fencing off waterways.

Livestock become more sustainable by growing all feed on the premises

Sharon Krause's farm is located on 153 acres of rolling hills, timber and creeks in Dallas County, Iowa. Until three years ago, the farm had been a horse ranch. Currently her organic sheep flock consists of 150 breeding ewes, which she hopes to double in the coming years. Her goal is to become a more sustainable livestock farming operation by growing all feed on the premises.

If you plan to attend, please contact Sharon by September 12 at 515-457-6362 or send her an email at "I look forward to learning from the practices of others while sharing what we do at Dalla Terra," says Sharon. "Together we are stronger."

Directions: To Dalla Terra Ranch, 35035 I Avenue, Earlham, IA 50072

Take I-80 to exit 104 (Earlham), which is 17 miles west of West Des Moines. Turn north and proceed approximately 3/4 mile. The farm is on the west side of the road at the top of the hill. You will see white fencing and a small red barn.

Practical Farmers of Iowa and its members will be hosting more than 30 field days in 2011. Most field days are free, and everybody is welcome to all of them. For a copy of the 2011 Field Day Guide, you can call the PFI office at 515.232.5661 or down load a printable PDF at
