K-State's Annual Swine Industry Day Slated for Nov. 16

Challenge of PCVA disease is a featured topic.

The 2006 Kansas State University Swine Industry Day will be held Nov. 16 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the K-State Alumni Center.

The event provides swine producers from across the Midwest with information about the latest technology in swine nutrition and management and includes research updates, says Jim Nelssen, K-State professor of animal science and industry.

Dr. Steve Henry and Dr. Lisa Tokach of Abilene Animal Hospital, two renowned swine practitioners, will address Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (PCVAD), a major disease challenge to the swine industry, during the morning program. During the afternoon, they will address "How to Deal with PCVAD if You Have it and How to Avoid it if You Don't." Also, during the afternoon program, Lynn Harrison of the National Pork Board will address "Critical Issues Facing the Pork Industry."

The K-State Swine Team will present an "Update on current K-State Swine Research to Help Improve Net Return of a Swine Business." Finally, a feature of this year's K-State Swine Day will be a presentation on "Fifty Years of Kansas Pork Leadership" by Tim Stroda of the Kansas Pork Association.

In addition to the presentations, there will be lunch, a technology trade show that participants can view at their convenience, and a K-State Pork Tailgate Party from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Kansas Pork Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the Tailgate Party.

Early registration fees are $15 per person and due by Nov. 10. Registration at the door will be accepted at $25. There is no charge for students who pre-register. Forms can be found at Click on "Swine Day," located under the Upcoming Events section.
