K-State, Cargill Team Up For Reciprocal Meat Conference

Wide range of topics will be discussed; more than 600 people expected to attend June 19-22 session.

Kansas State University's Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and Food Science Institute will team up with Cargill, Inc., to host the 64th Reciprocal Meat Conference June 19-22 in Manhattan. 

More than 600 professional American Meat Science Association members, student AMSA members, emeriti, and spouses are expected to attend.

"We're happy to be bringing so many meat scientists and students to K-State, to not only show them K-State's facilities and programs, but also to share with them what our community and state have to offer," said K-State professor of animal sciences and industry, Michael Dikeman.

The program will include plenary speakers, concurrent session speakers and 'reciprocation session' speakers.

 Topics will include: Feeding the World, Carbon Footprint of Livestock and Meat Production, Food and Fiber Needs for the World, Product Development, Ensuring Food Safety, Proteomics, Meat Tenderness, Regulatory and Policy Changes for the Future, Meat Color, Consumer Views of Food Safety,  Consumer Confidence, E. coli O17:H7 and Strategies for Intervention, and nearly 30 Reciprocation Session Topics. 

Melvin Hunt, who recently retired from K-State's animal science faculty, will receive the International Award at the meeting.

"This will be the third time that K-State has hosted the RMC -- the only university to do so that many times.  K-State last hosted this national conference in 1991," Dikeman said.   

The AMSA fosters community and professional development among individuals who create and apply science to provide safe and high quality meat, poultry, fish and seafood.
