A U.S. District Court judge has dismissed two Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine lawsuits against the International Dairy Foods Association, Dairy Management Inc., National Dairy Council and several individual companies.
The PCRM suits challenged the healthy weight with dairy marketing program, in which dairy groups promote dairy products as helpful for adults seeking to lose weight. The dairy groups cite research indicating that a reduced-calorie diet including three servings of milk or dairy products may help adults achieve better results than cutting calories without dairy.
"The industry will continue to leverage this message as part of our comprehensive nutrition education and marketing programs," says Greg Miller, an NDC executive vice president.
PCRM cited research with opposite results, in which dairy products cause weight gain rather than loss. The group has encouraged individuals to avoid milk in their diets altogether for a variety of reasons. PCRM also had a lawsuit dismissed earlier this year which asked for lactose intolerance warning labels on milk.
