Japan U.S. Beef Imports Climbing

The country brought in 50% more U.S. beef in June than the previous month.

Thanks to relaxed inspection requirements and increased summer demand, Japanese imports of U.S. beef were up 50% in June, according to Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, as reported by Nikkei.

Japan imported 4,311 tons of U.S. beef in June, up 50% from May. In mid-June, Japan rescinded a rule requiring that every box of beef from the United States be checked, which might help explain the jump, in addition to larger orders ahead of the summer season's peak demand.

Still, Japan is far from importing as much beef now as it did before its 2003 ban of U.S. beef, when it accepted about 20,000 tons of U.S. beef per month.
