Iowa's FSA Advisory Committee Reappointed

President Obama has reappointed the current 5-member state committee for USDA's Iowa Farm Service Agency. The panel oversees the operation of federal farm programs in the state.

On Jan. 19 John Whitaker, state executive director of USDA's Farm Service Agency in Iowa announced the reappointment of the current five-member FSA State Committee. The state committee is responsible for the oversight of farm programs, county committee operations, appeals, federal farm policy determinations and also provides FSA program information to the general public and other agency stakeholders.

"I'm grateful our state committee members were reappointed and will continue their involvement with the Iowa FSA," says Whitaker. "Through administration of programs that include price support, conservation, disaster assistance and farm credit programs, FSA promotes and protects agricultural practices to ensure a safe, affordable, abundant and nutritious food supply for all consumers."

The individuals reappointed to serve on this committee are:

John Judge serves as the chairperson. Judge is from Albia in southern Iowa and has over 40 years of experience in agricultural and commercial lending. The Judge family owns a century farm in Monroe County.

Gary Lamb is from Chelsea in Tama County and began farming in 1952 as a high school freshman. He has been involved in local, state and federal programs related to agriculture and rural issues as well as internationally by being a part of agricultural delegations to Russia, Japan and France.

Richard Machacek is from Winthrop in northeast Iowa and is a partner/owner of Machacek Farms Inc., a row crop operation. He's been involved with lawmakers regarding farm issues and programs for over 35 years.

Maria Vakulskas Rosmann lives near Harlan in western Iowa, and is co-owner of Rosmann Family Farms, a certified organic operation that is a diversified grain and livestock farm.

Matthew Russell uses sustainable agriculture and direct marketing on Coyote Run Farm near Lacona in south-central Iowa, which he co-owns. The farm operation produces vegetables and uses rotational grazing, and also produces hay, row crops and livestock. Russell also works with projects that have to do with the development of Iowa's local food system and rural economy.

FSA state committee oversees the spending of taxpayer dollars

"We are humble and honored to be a part of the committee," says member Gary Lamb. "This process helps feed hungry people, and what more noble profession could you be a part of than that?  In Iowa, the state committee has a tremendous responsibility to be accountable for the use of taxpayer dollars for farm programs. For example, FSA allocated more than $1.3 billion in federal farm program benefits to producers statewide in fiscal year 2010."
