Iowa Farmer Honored By U.S. Grains Council

Iowa Farmer Honored By U.S. Grains Council

Gordon Wassenaar received Lifetime Achievement Award at U.S. Grains Council annual meeting. He's hosted thousands of foreign visitors on his farm, on behalf of USGC and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board.

Gordon Wassenaar has hosted thousands of foreign visitors on his farm over the years, showing them how Iowa and U.S. farmers produce an abundant, high quality corn crop year after year. While hosting trade teams and grain industry officials from foreign lands is very visible, Wassenaar has served the U.S. Grains Council and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board in many other ways, too.

Some service goes beyond the number of years of involvement in an organization, notes Tom Dorr, chief executive of the USGC. To recognize those individuals that have gone above and beyond to help accomplish the mission of U.S. Grains Council, the USGC Board of Directors established the Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is conferred by a vote of the board and it is a pretty exclusive group. To date, there have been only five recipients: Owen Newlin; Terry Francl; Neil Strong; Glen Buckley and Ken Hobbie.

At the USGC's 51st Annual Board of Delegates meeting held recently in San Francisco, the council added to that number. The board of directors presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to farmer Gordon Wassenaar, who has given years of service to the Iowa Corn Promotion Board and USGC.

He's served in many leadership roles, helping USGC carry out its mission

Throughout his years of service at the U.S. Grains Council, Wassenaar served in many leadership roles including the executive committee, long-range planning committee, value-added advisory team and the biotechnology advisory team. Wassenaar has hosted thousands of representatives from more than 70 countries on his farm near Prairie City, Iowa. While Wassenaar became an official USGC delegate in 2000, his role in agriculture began many years before that. Wassenaar has been farming for 54 years, raising corn and soybeans.

He is a past chairman of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board and as served on many Iowa Corn committees including currently serving on the Iowa Corn Promotion Board's "Exports and Grain Trade Committee." His previous positions also include a term of vice president of the American Soybean Association Board, as president of the Iowa Soybean Association and as president of the Farmers Coop Exchange in Prairie City.

A video of his highlighted career is available here:

The Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) works to develop and defend markets, fund research, and provide education about corn and corn products. The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) is a membership organization lobbying on ag issues on behalf of its 6,500 farmer members. Both organizations work on the joint mission to create opportunities for long-term Iowa corn grower profitability.
