Hunger Task Force Donations Shatter Record at State Fair

More than 180,000 pounds of food items collected.

Thursday, Aug. 6, opening day of the 2009 Wisconsin State Fair was a record setting day for Hunger Task Force $2 Dollar Day, which took place from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.  This year, in the sixth year of the promotion, fairgoers that brought at least two nonperishable food items to designated areas at admission gates received $2 admission into the Fair.

Fairgoers responded to the call to help the hungry and stock the shelves of Hunger Task Force by donating a record 180,000 pounds of nonperishable food items!  Collections shattered the previous record set in 2008 which was 106,000 pounds.

The promotion was scheduled to end at 6 p.m. however, with lines at many admission gates of people wishing to donate, Wisconsin State Fair officials allowed Fairgoers in until just after 6:30pm.  When the promotion concluded, 59,236 Fairgoers participated versus 29,958 in 2008.

"Wisconsin State Fair could not be more proud of our partnership with Hunger Task Force," said Patrice Harris, director of public relations and communications. "We made every effort to spread the word about the real need for participation today, and our Fairgoers responded beyond what we imagined.  With the number of people still in line at 6pm the Fair extended admission in an effort to collect as much food as loss of gate revenue for the Fair.  We recognize the need that is there and we did not want to turn away people coming to help those who need it."

The Fair has numerous competitions for the public to participate in and watch. Fairgoers can also stop by Central Mall each day of the Wisconsin State Fair for fun activities and opportunities to participate in games and competitions hosted by the Fair's generous daily sponsors. The 2009 Wisconsin State Fair, presented by U.S. Cellular, continues through Sunday, Aug. 16.
