How To 'Hammer' Stink Bugs

How To 'Hammer' Stink Bugs

Current insecticide options all have their limitations; see the list.

As reported in March's American Agriculturist, a scoop, shovel or a hammer may be the most effective means of killing the brown marmorated stinkbug. But it's not the most practical means of protecting crops from exploding BMSB populations.

In early January, a national working group of state, federal and industry experts developed a list of insecticides with varying degrees of effectiveness. And states are pursuing Section 18 emergency use labels for other products, reports George Hamilton, co-chair of the task force and Rutgers University Extension pest management specialist.

The most effective control is to scout for egg masses and use a pesticide on newly hatched nymphs – not adult stinkbugs, says Hamilton.
