House Version of COOL Will Be in Senate Farm Bill

Harkin says House compromise version will be used in Senate.

Thirty-one Senators this week wrote a letter to Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, asking him to include the compromise on Country of Origin Labeling that was reached in the House version of the Farm Bill.

The letter stated, "Failure of the Senate to include identical language to solidify this agreement from the onset of our farm bill debate creates an unnecessary opportunity for some to generate obstacles at a time when great momentum forward has been achieved."

Harkin told reporters Tuesday that he would use the same language as the House did for mandatory Country of Origin Labeling in the Senate bill. He says he is hopeful to begin the mark-up of the Senate farm bill before the Columbus Day recess on Oct. 6.
