If you are in need of top quality dairy heifers, or even just one or two, West Lafayette is the place to be this Saturday. The Purdue University Dairy Club is hosting their 11th annual Boilermaker Heifer Sale. Sale time is 1 p.m. on April 27.
A lunch is available from 11 am to 12:30 p.m. All times are EDT. You will have an opportunity to view the heifers during lunch.
The sale will be held at the Machinery Shed at the Baker Animal Science complex north of Montmorenci and approximately 2 miles north of US 52 and 1 mile east of US 231. The Purdue Dairy Center is on the same road as the Machinery Shed, but about 1 mile farther north. The Purdue Invitational Dairy Judging Contest is held in the same place in March where this sale will be held.
It's a consignment sale and can feature animals from different breeds. This year the sale will include open heifers, bred heifers, and even a few young cows. Doug Wicker of the Purdue Dairy Club, is chairman of the sale this year. The theme for the sale is "The Legacy Starts Here."
The group has a website, but at last check the site was not fully updated for 2012. You can, however, find contact information to request a catalog of this year's offerings.
Proceeds from the sale help the dairy club carry out various activities, Wicker says. Those include Spring Fest at Purdue, Milk Monday, the dairy judging invitational contest and other community service activities carried out by the dairy club. The Purdue Dairy Club was named the top option club above all other ag option clubs in 2011.
