The barn quilts of Green County will be highlighted along with related activities during Green County Barn Quilt Day on July 14. Barn Quilts are an outdoor art installation showcasing rural architecture against a backdrop of the scenic countryside.
A bus tour departing from downtown Monroe at 10 a.m. (boarding by Goetz Theatre) will take participants on the back roads to view approximately 30 barn quilts – with stories along the way about the quilt patterns, the farms, and the farm families. The two-hour tour will be led by Lynn Lokken and Kris Winkler, co-chairs of the Green County Barn Quilt project. Special guest joining the group will be author Suzi Parron, author of Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement. Snacks will be provided on the tour; lunch is on your own.
In addition to the guided tour, there will be quilt-related activities open to the public (at no cost) in Monticello, just 15 minutes north of Monroe. You can enjoy the beauty of both antique and new quilts amidst the beauty of the flowers at an outdoor quilt show from 1 to 4 p.m. at Montesian Gardens. Quilter's Compass, a full-service quilt shop offering fabric, notions, and the popular "Green County Barn Block of the Month" kits and classes, will be hosting author Suzi Parron for a reading and book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. Parron has traveled throughout the United States, visiting barn quilt sites and witnessing how barn quilts have become a folk art movement across the nation. Quilting enthusiasts will also enjoy the textile exhibit featuring fabric quilts based on barn quilt patterns at the Dining Room at 209 Main in downtown Monticello – open for viewing from 1 to 4 p.m. While in Monticello, visitors can enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the food stands set up in the park for the Monticello Homecoming Festival taking place over the weekend.
Seating for the narrated tour is limited and reservations ($10) are required in advance. Checks payable to Green County Barn Quilts can be sent to: UWEX, 2841 - 6th St., Monroe, WI 53566. There is no admission fee for the quilt shows or author talk.
