New wetlands and prairie restoration project will highlight region's pre-farming 1850s topography.

The Board of Directors of the Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center – Farmamerica recently was presented with a check for $35,270 from Alliance Pipeline L.P. and its General Partner, Alliance Pipeline Inc. of Calgary, AB, Canada, to help construct a new facility known as the Farmamerica Environmental Education and Prairie/Wetlands Restoration project.

The sponsored portion of the project will be known as the Alliance Pipeline Prairie.

The project, to be completed over the next year, will result in improvements in wildlife and aquatic habitats, increase the numbers of native grasses and wild flowers, provide for signage and walking trails as well as a weather shelter kiosk with photos and interpretations of the center.

The ponds and wetlands associated with the prairie will be restored to the condition intended by the designers of the educational program and layout of the overall interpretive center with emphasis on the time prior to settlement of the region by European farm families in the 1850s.

Executive director James Gibson says the development will add to the educational program at Farmamerica and will be of great interest to students and adult visitors of all ages.

"There is increasing interest in prairie restoration and this project will be a helpful tool in better understanding the ecological benefits and processes for that work," he said.

The Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center – Farmamerica is a 501 c (3) non-for-profit public/private partnership devoted to telling the story of Minnesota agriculture.  Established by the Minnesota Legislature in 1978, Farmamerica provides educational programming and facilities that reflect life on the Minnesota prairie from before settlement through the present.  It is located four miles west of Waseca and 20 miles east of Mankato just off US HWY 14 at CR 2 and 17.
