Farm Women's Program Provides Financial Education

Annie's project workshops begin Nov. 4.

Walworth, Racine and Kenosha County University of Wisconsin- Extension offices are sponsoring a four-session workshop that provides risk management education and tools to farm women who farm on their own or who are partners in a farming business. Annie's Project trains farm women so they can be better farm managers, whether in a partnership or on their own. The program provides networking opportunities to discuss similar issues with other farming women.

Workshop topics include training in the areas of financial records, production records, marketing plans and risk management; legal regulation and records; and human resources.

Farm women play a crucial role in the farm tasks they perform. "Women's work" includes farm work, household tasks, and for some, off-farm work as well. The majority of the women surveyed indicated that they "regularly" or "sometimes" do the farm bookkeeping and bill paying. Because of their close connection to and understanding of the farm business finances, women's involvement in the decision-making for their farm operation is critical.

Annie's project workshops meet four times over a five week period. The dates for the Burlington session are Nov. 4, 11, 18 and Dec. 2. All the dates are Saturdays and the workshop runs each day from 9 a.m. through noon. The total program cost is $50 per person for the four-session workshop. This fee includes refreshments, materials and speakers for each of the days. Class size is limited, registration deadline is October 27.
