Farm Energy Reduction Saves Money

Farm Energy Reduction Saves Money

Iowa Learning Farms' October webinar features farm energy reduction. Tune-in via your computer on October 19 and learn about more ways you can save energy dollars on your farm.

The Iowa Learning Farms' (ILF) October webinar, to be held Wednesday, Oct. 19 at Noon, will feature Mark Hanna, who will present "ISU Farm Energy: Energy Conservation and Efficiency." The webinar is part of a series, hosted by ILF, held on the third Wednesday of each month. The webinars are held over the noon hour through Adobe Connect. All that is needed to participate is a computer with Internet access.

Previous case studies show the potential for energy savings on Iowa's farms. ISU Farm Energy is developing educational materials for farmers and utility providers to raise awareness of energy efficiency practices on farming operations, including minimum tillage, machinery maintenance, livestock ventilation and other topics. With support from the Iowa Energy Center and Iowa State University Extension, this project will help farmers and utility providers work together to improve farm energy efficiency and reduce on-farm energy use. This webinar will specifically address tips and techniques for minimizing energy consumption during fall and spring field operations.

If you can't tune in Oct. 19, go to the archive later to watch this webinar

Mark Hanna is an Extension ag and biosystems engineer at ISU. He conducts adult education and applied research with agricultural field machinery including the areas of tillage, seeding, application, harvest and safety. He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in agricultural engineering from Iowa State University. Hanna was raised on a crop and livestock farm in western Illinois. Current projects include pesticide and fertilizer application, and farm energy efficiency. A precision nitrogen applicator design, developed under Hanna's direction, was recognized as one of the top 10 design innovations in the last 20 years by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE).

To connect to the webinar go to  Hanna will be able to answer questions from webinar "attendees" via the Adobe Connect chat box if you tune into the webinar when it is broadcast on October 19 at noon. If you can't tune-in at that time and watch and listen to it live that day, keep in mind that the ILF website homepage has links for archived webinars from previous months at ILF is a partnership between the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa State University Extension, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at ISU, USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service in Iowa, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; in cooperation with the Conservation Districts of Iowa organization and the Iowa Farm Bureau.
