Energy Bill Makes it Through House

The legislation still has to get past the Senate and the President.

By a 235-181 margin, the House of Representatives passed the Energy Bill Thursday. The bill had been stalled for quite some time and had been all but written off, but leaders managed to work out a deal.

Included in the legislation is a 36 billion gallon Renewable Fuel Standard by the year 2022 and a Renewable Electricity Standard. The National Farmers Union was quick to praise the House's action on a bill that would provide economic opportunities for rural America.

"An expanded RFS will continue the success of the current standard by increasing ethanol production and providing more opportunities for farmers, ranchers and the communities in which they live," NFU President Tom Buis said. "The new RES builds upon the success of the RFS and will generate record investments in new clean energy facilities in mostly rural areas."

The RES has been a very controversial issue that the President has said could cause him to veto the Energy Bill. Also the bill has to get by the Senate, where it may face some serious opposition.
