Last year, DuPont launched Aproach fungicide on 2.5 million acres.

According to Todd Robran, DuPont's U.S. grains fungicide manager, Aproach is capable of more reliable results because it moves through the crop and canopy more effectively.

"Aproach is very effective in those racehorse hybrids that are more susceptible to disease," Robran notes. Even without a disease present, Robran says Aproach provides a stay-green effect, which many growers have come to expect with fungicide applications.

Where Aproach really shines is its ability to move throughout the entire crop and canopy. In testing, Robran says DuPont researchers noticed the fungicide has an efficient translocation property that moves it throughout the entire leaf.

Additionally, Aproach's vapor activity ensures movement from leaf to leaf. "With these two properties, distribution throughout the entire crop is excellent," Robran adds.

DuPont's Aproach is a new type of strobilurin fungicide. The scientific name for the active ingredient is picoxystrobin.

Robran notes the cost is in line with other strobilurin fungicides. The recommended application timing is at tassel for the 6-ounce rate. Aproach can be tank-mixed with a number of herbicides and insecticides.

Thus far, marketing has been focused on Pioneer growers. However, DuPont hopes to expand sales.

Dual-mode of action
This year, DuPont added another fungicide to their lineup. The newest addition is Aproach Prima.

Robran notes the newest fungicide is a dual-mode of action offering – combining a strobilurin and triazole into one package. As the name suggests, Aproach Prima combines the strobilurin component of Aproach fungicide with a triazole. The new triazole active ingredient comes from the chemical cyproconazol.

The dual protection provides preventive and curative activity on numerous diseases, including gray leaf spot, Northern corn leaf blight, Southern leaf blight and common rust in corn. It is labeled for use on soybean rust and brown spot in soybeans. In wheat, Aproach Prima can be used on downy mildew, rusts, tan spot, Septoria leaf blotch and glume blotch.

"With Aproach Prima, we're targeting high-value crops like seed corn," Robran says. "Or, with the dual modes of action, it's an ideal choice for southern growers with frogeye leaf spot resistance concerns."

Additionally, DuPont's website notes Aproach Prima is a good choice for extremely high-risk acres with a history of high disease pressure, numerous years of corn-on-corn or extreme residue build-up. Aproach Prima can also be used in white or waxy corn.

Aproach Prima also has the same systemic movement properties of Aproach. Robran says this ensures movement throughout the crop canopy.
