Two UW-Extension Dairy Team's and Lakeshore Technical College Dairy Worker's Training Sessions entitled "Calving Assistance" will be held Tuesday, April 7- 8. at Saxon Homestead Farms, LLC (15621 South Union Road, Cleveland) from 12 to 3 p.m. The April 7 session is an all-Spanish Training with Julia Reyes-Hamann, an independent dairy consultant and former calf manager for a 700-cow dairy while the April 8 session will be provided in English by Kiel Veterinary Clinic's Dr. Dave Mueller. The sessions will feature a mini-lecture focusing on the stages of calving, calf presentations, signs of calving distress and when and how to provide calving assistance. Since the farm is a seasonal calving farm, participants will have an opportunity for hands-on work with cows calving.
English and Spanish speaking dairy workers are encouraged to attend the appropriate session. All participants will receive materials in the appropriate language along with a certificate of completion.
The cost for the program is $25 per person and includes materials and refreshments. The session is limited to 20 participants to provide an opportunity for all participants to participate in the demonstrations and hands on activities; therefore pre-registration is required.
