Conservation Stewardship Program Rule Comment Period Extended

Conservation Stewardship Program Rule Comment Period Extended

Producers have until Jan. 20 to submit comments on USDA's Conservation Stewardship Program interim rule

USDA said Tuesday it is extending the public comment period on the Conservation Stewardship Program interim rule by 15 days, to Jan. 20.

"This extension will provide stakeholders with additional time to comment on the CSP interim rule," Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief Jason Weller said.

"At nearly 70 million acres, CSP is the nation's largest conservation program. Input through the public comment process will help NRCS finalize a CSP rule that works for participants and continues to deliver greater conservation benefits for our Nation."

The proposal revises rules under CSP that govern responsibilities of the Regional Conservation Partnership Program. CSP also pays participants for conservation performance – the better the performance, the higher the payment.

In CSP, producers install conservation enhancements to make positive changes in soil, water, and air quality; water quantity; plant and animal resources; and energy conservation. Nearly 70 million acres have been enrolled in the program since its launch in 2009. See CSP changes under the 2014 Farm Bill on the NRCS website.

Official notice of the comment period alteration and instructions for submitting electronic or mailed comments can be found in the Federal Register.
