Coalition Meeting Focuses on Biotech

Groups work to find common ground on biotech issues.

The International Grain Trade Coalition met in Brussels, Belgium this week and spent much of their time discussing biotechnology regulatory issues. The impact of biotech crops on the global grain market is significant.

"Meetings among IGTC members help us identify common ground on various biotechnology issues facing international trade," says Gretchen Flanley, U.S. Grains Council director of biotechnology programs. "This week’s meetings focused on the asynchronous approvals of biotech products around the world and how this can best be addressed."

IGTC took advantage of being in Brussels to meet with Michael Mack, the chief operating officer of Syngenta Seeds. They also met with the European Commission and agricultural value chain members while in Belgium.

"The Council is committed to sharing science-based information about biotechnology with everyone from government officials to importers to consumers," Flanley says. "IGTC offers additional opportunities to share this knowledge with people around the world."
