Cellulosic Ethanol Faces Uphill Climb

Cellulosic Ethanol Faces Uphill Climb

Lack of capital and federal support are holding back progress, says NDSU biofuels economist

Cole Gustafson, NDSU’s biofuels economist, says it may take a while before cellulosic ethanol development gets off the ground.

Lack of capital, proven technology and federal support are all holding back efforts to produce transportation fuel from corn stover, corn cobs, switchgrass and straw, he says.

The economy is a factor, but so is federal support. Solar and wind power appear to be getting a better deal.
