Celebrate Agriculture With CALS At Wisconsin State Fair

Celebrate Agriculture With CALS At Wisconsin State Fair
Event features Bucky Badger, UW Marching Band, cheesemaking demonstration.

On Wednesday, Aug. 10 the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences will celebrate UW-Madison Day at the Wisconsin State Fair. Along with Bucky Badger, the UW Marching Band, CALS will occupy a corner of the fairground's Central Mall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a line-up of entertainment and education.

CALS kicks things off with a cheesemaking demonstration on the Central Mall main stage at 10a.m. featuring Babcock Dairy Plant's master cheesemaker Gary Grossen. And right after the cheesemaking demonstration, there'll be cheese and ice cream samples from the Babcock Dairy.

A "farmers market" tent assembled and staffed by top flight agricultural scientists from our statewide system of Agricultural Research Stations (ARS) will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help visitors connect the food they eat with its roots in research and farming. ARS researchers will be on hand to answer questions about a long list of Wisconsin-grown goods: corn, soybeans, sweet corn, cranberries, potatoes, apples, cherries, grapes, onions, carrots, beets, oats, peas and more.

CALS scientists also will lead numerous family-friendly "hands-on" science activities in Exploration Stations covering such topics as turf and soil management, wildlife, insects and more.

If people grow weary of all the agricultural and natural science events, they can choose to dress up like a football player, shoot some hoops, have a picture taken with Bucky or even enjoy a scavenger hunt and compete for UW prizes. There'll even be a special UW parade.

And, your visit to the State Fair can also help others. To benefit Milwaukee-area children who lack the equipment for a successful school year, UW-Madison is sponsoring a school supplies drive. Simply bring a new, unopened school supply to a State Fair admissions gate, and you'll receive a voucher for $5 off a Midway "Ride All Day" wristband (while supplies last). One discount per item donated. For more information on the Wisconsin State Fair, visit:
